Footnotes 012
Everything I'm looking forward to wearing this fall: Brooke Callahan red pants, 2000s Miu Miu denim skirt, vintage Max Mara leather trench, and more.
I published a fall wishlist in August and am back to report on my progress. A few of my recently acquired items have already popped up in the September and October Outfits newsletters, but here I’m delving further into what I’ve added to my closet this season, how I plan on wearing each, and (of course) links to similar pieces should you be so inclined to peruse.
I might earn a small commission if you make a purchase through one of the links in this newsletter.
LEATHER TRENCH

It is probably abundantly clear to you by now that a long leather coat is a core tenet of my closet. I do not feel fully dressed until I slip one on; this might be a “me” problem. I recently purchased a vintage Max Mara camel-colored leather trench via Vestiaire Collective to complement the black leather coat I acquired from Maj Kiosk last fall, expect to see it in the upcoming November Outfits letter.
I suggest shopping vintage when it comes to this category, and take your time. A leather trench is an investment, and small stylistic choices in design separate just any leather trench from one you’ll want to wear for years to come. In my experience, I’ve found that Vestiaire Collective is a fruitful resource for adding a leather trench to your closet. A few I’ve saved recently include:
This black leather trench (US 8) looks like absolute butter
This beige leather trench is the blueprint (FR 52)
You cannot go wrong with a simple black leather trench (US 4) with what appears to be silver hardware
I considered this Paloma Wool ‘Ginevra’ leather coat but ultimately decided to go with a vintage option—regardless, this jacket was imprinted on my brain the second I saw it
An honorable mention for this not leather but ostensibly perfect vintage Max Mara trench (US 6).
RED ACCENTS

Red accents started creeping into my feed last winter in the form of red tights as the centerpiece of an outfit. I was intrigued but only recently felt compelled to seek out the shade. Now it feels like red tights were the gateway to head-to-toe red outfits, and if the recent shows were any indication, the color isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. It feels inevitable that the shade will meet the same fate as millennial pink, but I’m on board for now.
After eyeing Brooke Callahan’s tie pants for a few weeks, I purchased a red pair with plenty of ideas on how to wear them now—with the aforementioned camel-colored leather trench, my extreme cashmere cream-colored one-shoulder top, and Maison Margiela black tabi slingbacks, for starters—and in warmer months ahead (a black Nu Swim tank and By Far black thong sandals). A few red items on my radar this season include:
Loro Piana red leather jacket (US 6)
I would wear this extreme cashmere blouson cardigan in berry as a top, yes, of course, but also tied around my shoulders on top of a winter coat for the thrill of it
I can’t stop wearing my Brooke Callahan red tie pants
You can find red tights anywhere, but here is a tomato-red opaque pair, a sheer red pair from Falke, or start slow with a red sock
Finally, Gil Rodriguez’s collection of cotton basics in ‘tomate’ is also an excellent starter for the red-accent-curious.
INTERESTING BUTTON-UPS

I’m considering this nebulous category title the next evolution of my button-up era. To me, the Carmen Amsterdam styling (far left) is perfect. I would pair the look with straight-leg trousers and MNZ Olympia wedges and wear it for the rest of my life, happily. In the meantime, I’m attempting the effect with Martine Rose wrap shirts and dusting off a Jacquemus pinstripe button up I bought in 2016.
Carmen Amsterdam house shirt—pictured here with a stunningly beautiful belt by Santangelo
Martine Rose (very much on sale) striped wrap shirt
I didn’t anticipate gravitating towards a fitted poplin shirt, but the Gabriel for Sach ‘olivia’ shirt changed something in me
DARK RINSE DENIM SKIRT

Finally, I purchased the 2000s Miu Miu denim skirt (pictured, far left) via Poshmark this month and have already worn it with a simple Nu Swim tank, MNZ ‘pablo’ belt, vintage Manolo Blahnik boots (similar), and camel leather trench—a very good autumn outfit. A vintage, dark-rinse denim skirt feels like a worthy fall investment, here are a few to consider:
I’ll be back with November outfits later this month… see you soon. 💌
oooof that vintage Max Mara trench!!! oh to be a Max Mara woman 💔
