December Outfits II, featuring Joelle Hyman
Joelle's cold-weather outfits and enviable coat collection.
This month, Joelle Hyman — fellow newsletter writer and self-proclaimed hoarder — has documented her go-to outfits as of late. Based in New York, Joelle works in the beauty industry and writes direct line. In it, she spills her invaluable industry knowledge and seasoned opinions on everything from building the ideal coat wardrobe to Sephora sale picks (I will only listen to Joelle’s opinion on this subject).
Joelle is a longtime internet friend whose distinct personal style, I believe, thrives in colder months with ankle-grazing vintage coats paired with men’s denim and Elsa Peretti jewelry, along with her point of view on scarves (they should be sweaters). Here’s what Joelle is wearing this month…
OUTFIT 1
Vintage Ralph Lauren lined trench coat
Vintage USC sweatshirt
Uniqlo U crew neck t-shirt
Adidas nylon track pants
Tory Burch ballet flats (TORY!! BRING THESE BACK!!!!)
LL Bean small zip top boat tote
Celine Triomphe oval sunglasses
Where I wore it: I am quite literally going to work here, so I would 100% wear this to work. I do a lot of bopping around the office and these shoes are just the best for that. I like to be comfortable and warm. The sweater I am holding eventually went around my shoulders and neck. I like layers and accessorizing in off ways. I have and will always say a sweater is the best scarf. This one is Izod Lacoste–it is a great material around the neck. Highly recommend. These Phoebe-Philo-by-way-of-Tory-Burch flats are the best shoes that I own. They are so comfortable and make anything look cool. Tory, are you there? Please make these again! I would buy 3 more colors. I would do anything for more pairs. The necklace and ring are my grandpa’s.
OUTFIT 2
Vintage Alanis Morrisette t-shirt
Converse Chuck Taylor low top All Star
Celine Triomphe oval sunglasses
The Row everyday small hobo
Tiffany & Co. Elsa Peretti open heart necklace
Where I wore it: I kind of only go to work, but again, I’d wear this to casual shopping on the weekend for a dirtbag-y kind of day. It’s not that crazy or exciting. Sometimes I want to look fab and other times I am like...let me just put clothes on. This is one of the latter!
I am really into these pants. I sized up (and maybe one too many) but I am fine to wear any size pants as long as they’re not too tight. That’s what belts are for. I don’t ever wear pants this color, so I figured I would take a $40 risk—again, they were on sale. I recommend for a nice casual pant to add to your rotation in place of jeans. This Alanis shirt is from one of my favorite vintage stores Leisure Centre. In my mind, I am a regular. I hope they think I am, too!!! I am a gatekeeper (sorry) but I will share my love for Leisure Centre. Go check it out.
OUTFIT 3
Vintage Ralph Lauren wool henley collared sweater
Vintage Yale t-shirt (worn underneath)
J.Crew Italian leather dress belt
Converse Chuck Taylor low top All Star
No Agency two-tone hat
Celine Triomphe oval sunglasses
The Row everyday small hobo
Vintage Anne Klein wool grey coat
Where I wore it: Again, I’m going to work but I would wear this on the weekend, too. I don’t really dress for my destination. I find that really boring. I like to wear what I like to wear. I adjust the tone of the outfit with a shoe or coat! This coat is one of my best Depop finds—I wore it all winter last year and probably will again this year. The Gap jeans were a $30 (on sale) risk I was willing to take...great little wardrobe filler jean for when the Levi’s are too constricting.
OUTFIT 4
Vintage Yale t-shirt
Aritzia Perfect Cozy Fleece Zip Hoodie
Vintage Ralph Lauren lined trenchcoat
Converse Chuck Taylor low top All Star
Celine Triomphe oval sunglasses
The Row everyday small hobo
Tiffany & Co. Elsa Peretti open heart necklace
Where I wore it: The most essential thing in everyone’s wardrobe is a cropped grey hoodie! I love this one from Artizia. It’s a great layering piece. I actually really like all of Aritzia’s TNA sweats because the cuts are really nice and flattering like vintage, but without the hunting. I have been wearing my low top Converse a lot and recommend you do the same! I really think you only need like 6 or 10 (lol) pairs of shoes to get through life...these are one of them!
OUTFIT 5
Vintage fur I bought off my pal Sasha who bought it at a vintage store...we should all be doing more of this!
Uniqlo U crew neck t-shirt
Vintage navy crewneck sweatshirt
Chanel ballet flats
Celine Triomphe oval sunglasses
The Row everyday small hobo
Tiffany & Co. Elsa Peretti open heart necklace
Where I wore it: This is my ideal outfit at all times, for all occasions! Head to toe! These Skims sweatpants run oversized and I once again sized up too much, but I love them! I want to drown in this fabric from Skims. It is super, super cozy and warm. This sweatshirt I got at Graceland in Ridgewood. They have really good vintage and they do tailoring. Such a cute spot. I will be wearing this exact outfit everywhere until it hits 65 degrees again! I want to say, too, these are Chanel flats I bought brand new for myself for my birthday five years ago. I wore them so much that I literally ran a hole in the sole. I sent them away to get re-soled and repainted at Jim’s (again, would love to gatekeep but this is a life-saving necessity if you invest in new and vintage designer items!!) and they came back to me as a brand new pair of shoes. Thank you, Jim’s. I will wear these for infinity. I am happy I invested in one new pair, but I would probably buy any other pairs on TRR.
OUTFIT 6
Saks Potts Camilla sweater via TRR: I got this on TRR new with tags for 50%+ off retail, so thank you to whoever sold it!
Uniqlo U crew neck t-shirt
J.Crew Italian leather dress belt
Chanel ballet flats
Celine Triomphe oval sunglasses
Porto Studio ‘the mini’ pouch
Vintage Anne Klein wool grey coat
Where I wore it: I have waited since August to wear this sweater. It was worth the wait! I would wear this to A Perfect Fall Day, perhaps walking in Brooklyn! Perusing stores and maybe even making a purchase. But I am also 100% wearing this to Thanksgiving at my mom’s, a coffee hang, a trip to The Container Store. You name it, this is the look! I love this Porto pouch. I switch between using it as a purse and a makeup bag in my larger bags. I’d really like to get the classic size in brown sometime soon. It’s super convenient and easy to bop around with!
I really enjoy her take on casualism. Very fun and cozy!
