This month, I’m excited to feature Kim Johnson’s go-to summer outfits. Kim is based in Brooklyn and leads Community at a tech startup called Geneva, where she helps communities from brands like Rare Beauty and Topicals to music fandoms come together. She previously led Community at Glossier, where I first connected with Kim in 2016 when I was a newly-appointed rep (the nostalgia). I’ve followed her on Instagram ever since and have been a longtime admirer of her personal style and our apparent mutual love of Tracee Ellis Ross. Here’s what Kim is wearing this summer…
OUTFIT 1
Zara blue one-shoulder top (old): This top is strangely nice quality and a really easy staple for me. And I would like to preface that I have one other Zara item in this roundup. Please do not come for me!
Kapital Denim lumber pants: These are probably my most worn pants at this point. I like my pants to be pretty loose and slouchy, and these do that perfectly without looking too big or dragging on the ground.
Manolo Blahnik pumps via TheRealReal: Similar pairs here (US 11), here (US 9) and here (US 9.5).
Where I’d wear it: To a work-related dinner or drinks (I actually did wear it for a work lunch but switched out the pumps for a flat sandal).
OUTFIT 2
Front General Store rib tank top: I love the white tanks from Front General Store in Dumbo. It’s one of my favorite places to shop in NY– they have stacks & stacks of tees and tanks like this one that are simple but sturdy quality.
Asata Maisé repurposed vintage skirt: I got this skirt from a Depop sale Assata was doing of items that she wasn’t selling. It was such a lucky find! I love everything she makes, and this skirt is my favorite for a night out. There’s a lil dip in the back that shows a bit more skin which makes it very sexy, I think.
Manolo Blahnik sandals via TRR: Here is a similar pair (US 10) in dark brown.
SC103 bag via Tangerine: I bought this bag in the spring at Tangerine in Brooklyn. It is definitely the most worn item in my closet this summer. The holes make it the sworn enemy of my string headphones, though.
Where I’d wear it: I wore this to dinner with my girlfriends at a pop-up restaurant called Habibi in Brooklyn. The stretchy skirt was a lifesaver after lots of lamb :)
OUTFIT 3
Vintage M by Missoni dress via The Break: I got this from a vintage pop up hosted by The Break. It was definitely on the struggle bus and very pre-loved when I bought it but I was able to get it to good condition with a little TLC. I love the length and knit material, perfect lil summer piece! (Please disregard the wrinkles, this was after a full day of wear 😩)
Zara tied strappy flat sandals: The second Zara item mentioned previously. They are very easy and work well with just about anything in my closet.
LL Bean Boat and Tote: Summer tings.
Where I’d wear it: To the beach. Underneath the dress are brown bikini bottoms and a green top from Triangl.
OUTFIT 4
Vintage sweater vest: I got this at a little thrift pop up and didn’t think I’d be able to wear it this summer. The weather has been so weird though, that I actually was able to pull it out once or twice already (sad!).
Kapital Denim lumber pants
J. Crew ballet flats: These are so old it’s not even funny. But I’ve been pulling them out more when I don’t want to wear sneakers or sandals, and they’ve been doing the trick.
The Row Park Tote: I got this as a treat to myself, mostly for traveling because I’m 30 now and would like to advance beyond a tote bag in the airport. It’s such a beautiful, simple bag, though, so I find myself reaching for it often, especially when I’m going into the office.
Where I’d wear it: To work!
OUTFIT 5
Hanes tank: This is just a men’s medium that I cut to sit under the boob. I actually think larger men’s sizes are better to work with as they don’t cling to the body as much, which ends up being sexier, IMO.
Unbranded cashmere striped top: This top is very thin, which is why I can get away with wearing it in the summer and not overheating. I bought it probably ten years ago at a closing sale for one of those random Soho stores.
Amomento Ripstop Fatigue Pants via Tangerine: We love Tangerine in this household! These pants are one of my favorite purchases this summer. They flex so well for so many different looks and feel very elevated while still quite relaxed.
Manolo Blahnik pumps via TRR
Fendi baguette via TheRealReal: This bag is my ride or die. No matter how many bags I buy, she will always be my forever plus one.
Where I’d wear it: I wore this to my friend’s art show. This is definitely a night out with friends (more wine & chat than cocktail & dancing) outfit for me.
OUTFIT 6
A Universe regroup tee: He cut this into a baby tee for me since it’s a men’s tee. The white around the neck and sleeves gives me late 90s/early 2000s, which I really love!
Unbranded track pants: I love a track pant, especially one that zips up the side of the leg. Adds a lil razzle dazzle.
Uniqlo cashmere sweater: Just bringing it along in case I get cold. I hate being cold. This is 5+ years old but here’s a similar knit.
New Balance 530s: I got these a year or so ago to replace my 990s, and I actually wear them so much more than I anticipated. They are also my comfiest shoe, so that helps.
SC103 bag: She flexes!
Where I’d wear it: I wore this to travel upstate with my girls for the weekend. Comfy but cute! Taurus words to live by.
Thank you for being here, and thank you to Kim for sharing her summer looks with us! I’ll see you soon with a mid-month outfit diary. 💌
